Rudyard Jr/Sr High School embraces 3D printing Rudyard Jr/Sr High School recently purchased three state of the art 3D Printers to be used throughout classrooms in the building. The program is being piloted by Mr. Clark and Mr. Kwiatkowski in their Computer Technology and Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) classes. “I’m so excited about the possibilities of this new technology for our school, not just for the ‘cool’ factor but for the usability of printed items, total variety of options and designs, plus the engineering side of things, said Technology teacher Jeramiah Clark. The possibilities for education and 3D printers are endless. “Students now will be able to see first-hand how a 3D printer works for practical application in all of the career fields that utilize them,” added Clark. Using a computer design program, students can design their own three-dimensional objects, or use open source websites to print objects created by others around the world. It is not uncommon for students and teachers to use the printer to design prototype parts, graphic design objects, replicas of historical items, or even parts for band instruments. Clark’s class has already printed a trumpet mouth piece, which a student took down to the band room and was able to get a good sound with. The challenge for this year is for the two teachers to see which class can design a flying drone that could be used for projects in other courses. 3D printing — also known as additive manufacturing — has been around for nearly three decades. The cost of 3D printers and it resources have decreased greatly in the past few years, making it more affordable for educational institutions to include them in their instructional practices. The machine uses a material, such as plastic, to print a three-dimensional object one thin layer at a time.

Colin Kirkwood, vice-president academic at Sault College, speaks to the board of governors during a meeting on Thursday. “We're trying to put as many supports in place as possible for the students when they get here,” Kirkwood told the college's board of governors during a meeting on Thursday. Some Chinese students are expected to “struggle a little bit” with English. Faculty at Jiujiang will deliver Sault College's motive power fundamentals-automotive repair in English on their campus. Twenty-nine students are studying English now to prepare to take this Ontario college certificate program. At least one Sault College faculty member will go to Jiujiang a minimum of once per semester for quality assurance visits. They will review portfolios of student work, answer questions from faculty about how to deliver the curriculum and help with any challenges related to program delivery. Students have the option of doing their second year of study at Sault College. They graduate with a Sault College diploma, an accomplishment expected to give Jiujiang students an advantage in the job market. “International credentials in China are viewed very favourably by employers,” said Kirkwood. Sault College students can attend the two schools if they are fluent in Chinese. The college wants to increase its number of partnerships with Chinese schools. Up to five Chinese schools could offer Sault College programming, says Kirkwood. No cap is on the number of Chinese schools sending students to Sault College “until we reach our capacity here on campus.” Sault College has 150 international students. Only one or two are currently from China. The new Chinese students are expected to live off campus rather than Ray Lawson Hall.
